Costume contact lenses can be a fun way to experiment with your appearance and see how you’d look with a different eye color. However, it’s important to remember that costume contact lenses are still medical devices, even if their purpose is largely cosmetic.
Today, Vision Care Plus answers some of the most frequently asked questions about costume contact lenses.
Question #1: What Are Costume Contact Lenses?
Costume contact lenses, which are sometimes called decorative/cosmetic/fashion contact lenses, are lenses that help change how your eyes look. Like regular contact lenses, they are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes.
Question #2: Where Can I Get Costume Contact Lenses?
While costume contact lenses are primarily used for aesthetic reasons, keep in mind that they are still medical devices. This means that you need to go to your family eye care clinic, have an eye exam and ask your eye doctor for a prescription. Doing so helps ensure that the costume contact lenses you’ll be using are safe and FDA-approved.
Question #3: What Will Happen If I Buy Over-the-Counter Costume Contact Lenses?
Without an eye exam, it’s possible that non-prescribed costume contact lenses are not a good fit for your eyes. As a result, your eyes may be scratched by the lenses and you’ll be at a higher risk of infection. In addition, according to federal laws, retailers cannot sell contact lenses, including decorative ones, without validating the patient’s prescription. So if you buy costume contact lenses without a doctor’s prescription, not only are you putting your eyes’ health and safety at risk, but you’re also breaking the law.
Question #4: Are Eye Problems From Using Non-Prescribed Costume Contact Lenses Common?
There are no statistics or comprehensive studies about eye injuries caused by using non-prescribed costume contact lenses. Nonetheless, your optometrist can tell you how often they have to treat eye problems brought about by this risky practice.
